Off the beaten track
Conveniently located within easy walking distance of the main train station, Il Guercino is named after one of Bologna’s famed Baroque artists and features reproductions of his works in the lobby and breakfast room. It’s an attractive and quiet setting, and the air conditioning (24 hours) in my room was a welcome respite from the August heat. The staff at the front desk was very helpful, directing me to local shops. The added charge for internet usage kept me from signing up. The added charge from breakfast struck me as justifiable, as the breakfast room was charming and bounteous. Il Guercino costs less than hotels in the historic city center. All in all, the price is right.

Wacky Wallpaper
The hotel was not too far from Bologna Station where the airport bus dropped us. We were too early for the room to be ready, but we were able to leave our luggage and then go out. The hotel is very quirky and attractive with lots of art and interesting things. Our room had epilepsy-inducing wallpaper, but was pleasant and clean and mercifully, air-conditioned. The price was good and it wasn’t too far to walk into town. I’d recommend it as a better- than -usual budget choice.
There’s a nice little market if you turn right when you leave the hotel, walk to the end of the street and turn left.
