The Basel Hilton
This was my first time visiting Switzerland and could not have asked for a better hotel. It is actually closer to the station that the Expedia map suggests - about 45 seconds walk, it is literally across the road from the main station. The only one small negative is that not all of the staff are conversant in English as you would expect from a five star hotel, but certainly not a big enough quibble to stop me staying here agin.
Traveller's tip on saving a few bucks
Actually saving a lot more than a few pounds! If like me, you plan to do several day trips by train (Geneva, Zurich etc)then it is well worth buying a Swiss Pass (not a Switzerland Interrail pass) available from most European travel centres. Overall the Swiss Pass worked out about considerably cheaper than buying seperate tickets or using other passes that are on the market. It is also valid on the scenic trains as well (you just need to pay a small supplement).

A very nice clean hotel
Very nice and clean hotel. We stayed on the executive floor which included the use of the lounge. The staff was extremly helpful and friendly. It is worth the extra cost. The only negative I can say is the rooms are very small for a luxury hotel.
Traveller's tip
The hotel provided free unlimited metro tickets for us which came in very handy as the public transportation in Basel is excellent and easy to use.
