A Monstrositiy of a Hotel.
This hotel is HUGE. The staff was friendly and attentive; yet, there is obvious lack of restaurants catering to a non Chinese pallet. Don’t let their naming of their "Western" style restaurnant fool you...it’s all Non Western. That said, there is a Marriot with better food next door, if you need a break from Chinese fare. Also, the gym never seemed to be open. It has a bar/coffee area, but I found it very uninviting.
Traveller's tip on getting the most out of your stay
While the cost of taxi cabs in China is cheap, I would recommend using the Guangzhou Metro. There is a metro stop adjacent to the Dong Fang hotel and it is very user friendly with signs in Chinese and English---very similar to Hong Kong. It takes far less time in this city to take the Metro than sit for an hour in a taxi cab.

Moldy
We stayed for 1 night in early September. We had a late check-in and, although the hotel was pretty empty, we were told by the reception that all the rooms with double beds were already taken so we had to stay in a room with 2 twin beds. Our room was located in the older wing of the building and had a moldy smell. Not only the room but the pillows had this smell. The sink water tasted horrible so had to use bottled water to brush our teeth. The hotel is huge and the building is pretty nice and well kept. If you are planning to stay here, make sure you stay in the new wing unless you enjoy mold.

WOW for the Money
A Five star at a super price. The room was huge and the service great. I could live there for months and be comfortable. Plenty of room to spread out. There is a terrific park across the street, good for walking and people watching. Other than that, the neighborhood was not so hot.. but the hotel makes up for it. I will stay there again.
