Well worth the visit

Good comfortable hotel set in great gardens in Monte above Funchal. Excellent views, friendly staff and comfortable rooms - only quibble was lack of tea/coffee making facilities in room.

First time driving there - go in the day (not at nigh as I did) -- the roads are narrow and steep. Small restaurant just outside the hotel gate was good value.

Paradise Found!

When I first visited Monte I took tea in the wonderful hotel gardens which are open to the public, and noticed the hotel. Having stayed there twice since, I can honestly say it is the most tranquil and civilised place to be on holiday! The food is very good, and not too expensive. The staff could not be more friendly and helpful - they even remembered me by name from my first visit. I have just booked to go again next year. If you want peace and tranquility, Monte is the place to go - and it is not ’soulless’ as one reviewer said, just devoid of the noisy beach crowd and rowdy night life. Sitting quietly in the gardens after dinner and watching the lights of the city below: sheer heaven!

Traveller's tip on recreational activities

The Tropical gardens which cascade down the valley are wonderful, but don’t miss the (free) botanical gardens in Monte (wind your way down to them on the left hand side of the church). There’s also the Jardim Botanico which has great views (as you come out of the Funchal cable car, turn right and a bit further on you come to another cable car.)

Gardeners Heaven

If you love your garden and gardening in general, this is the hotel for you. With our busy schedule we did not check the gardens out until towards the end of the holiday. We had no idea of the extent of the hotel grounds, the variety of the plants and the beautiful settings. Situated in Monte, adjacent to the toboggans the hotel is well outside Funchals hotel zone. This means transport is required to get into the city centre. Hotel buses are provided but the city bus service is quite good and discounted tickets are available in the town. The hotel restaurant is to die for. It is expensive but the quality is worth the price. (Eating out in Madeira is generally expensive anyway) Friendly and helpful staff helped make the stay one of our most memorable vacations.

Traveller's tip on getting the most out of your stay

Madeira is a walkers paradise, from the professional hill climbers to the Sunday afternoon stroller to the pub. For the mountain walks use a local guided tour The Lavada walks are fantastic and an absolute must. Levadas are irrigation channels that scar the island. Get a good book of which plenty are available on Amazon and a hire car. Bus services are not the best and taxis are expensive. A hire car will give you much more flexibility and you will be able to get to more of the remote walks.
