Cheap and cheerful, but amazing location!
We were slightly dubious before we arrived due to how little wed paid for four nights in Midtown, but those fears completely disappeared, once we stepped into our room (despite the slightly grumpy guys on reception). Okay it could do with a bit of TLC and the street outside was slightly noisy at times, but it was very clean and as for location... two blocks from the Empire State Building, 5th Avenue and Downtown. Couldnt be better! Wed definately choose Grand Union again.
We got a taxi from JFK to the hotel which was a flat rate of $45 (not including tolls and tip). This is a set rate from JFK to anywhere in Manhatten. Be careful on the way back, though. It took three attempts for us to persuade a driver to take us to the airport and that ended up costing us $60. Most hotels can arrange for a car/minibus to collect you and drop you off for less. Well definately use that option next time.

what a surprise!
We were very pleased with this hotel. It was safer than the big ones we have stayed in as the reception desk was by the elevator. The staff were friendly and helpful. The fridge in the room was a bonus as was the coffee shop next door. It is ideally situated for Macys, Empire State Building and Madison Square Garden. We felt it was very good value for money and would definitely go back.
Go to the Tenement Museum and do the Piecing it Together tour. Its best to book in advance. They bring to life the immigrant experience and you can see first hand how the immigrant communities lived and worked. Explore the area around - if you are a movie freak you can explore Delancey Street and go to Katzs diner (When Harry met Sally).

Good value and location
Was pleasantly surprised by good condition of hotel and quiet room; staff very pleasant and helpful, too. Hotel is within walking distance of restaurants and coffee shops; subway station (downtown only) is very close at the east end of the block. I would stay there again.
