Pleasantly surprised

Very good hotel, better than we expected given some of the reviews we read (after booking the holiday!) Room very clean, lovely sea view. Staff helpful and friendly. Food good, particularly salad bar, but agree that after a week, monotany was beginning to set in. We were AI and had excellent value - I suspect purchasing drinks etc would have been expensive. Close to airport, but aircraft noise NOT a problem. Machico lovely quiet small town

Traveller's tip on getting the most out of your stay

Use local buses. They are good, reliable and much cheaper than taxis or organised tours. Easy to bus inland then walk via a lavada, either back to hotel or to another bus route home. Hotel staff reluctant to tell you about these, as they (understandably) have to support local taxis and in house tour operators.

Returned to Dom Pedro Baia,Machico,Madeira

We were given a room on the top floor(10th)sea and inland view over the town.A standard room without tea making facilities which we would normally expect but we wanted to keep costs down. The weather was a little cool so I would not reccomend January but we did get a couple of sunny days, cloud and yes a little rain.It is also not the best time for flowers but the botanical gardens were pretty good and seeing the tropical birds was a little bonus. The cable car in Funchal was very good.A bit like a slow low flight in a plane up the mountain. We only booked bed and breakfast which gave the flexibilty of trying other places.Breakfast was much the same every day but the choice was very good and as someone reccomended perhaps best to only go for a week. The evening meal was really good value as it included a carafe of house wine, red or white. We tried elsewhere and it just confirmed you could not match the price, the food, the service, and ambiance. They even put on free entertainment every night so if you have a drink after your meal you might as well be entertained without going to look for it.

Traveller's tip on saving a few bucks

Book hotel and flight together for the best deal. If you can get breakfast as well, so much the better. It beats getting up and searching for a place to eat.

Great hotel

I recommend this hotel. It is especially worth paying extra for all inclusive as this not only includes food but a whole host of sporting activities such as archery and kayaking. My only disappointment was that Machico is too far away from the capital Funchal - it costs almost 30 euros each way by taxi.

Traveller's tip on getting the most out of your stay

Find an English speaking taxi driver - they are usually willing to offer a half or whole day rate and take you around showing you the sites - this is no use if you can’t understand them.
