HOLLYWOOD DOWNTOWNER HOTEL - WHAT A GEM
I had a great experience staying at the Hollywood Downtowner Hotel. Loved the retro exterior with the classic neon sign, and the well-tended courtyard with pool. My room had a great view of the Griffith Park Observatory. Hotel location is superb - slightly removed from the craziness of Hollywood and Highland, but easily accessible by foot, bus, or underground. Great local neighbourhood with facilities. And best of all incredibly friendly and helpful owners. (A bonus - included plentiful breakfast at Transylvania Restaurant next door.)

This hotel is filthy, dangerous and needs a lot of renovation.
I stayed at this hotel due to the covenient location. The place is very dangerous and the hotel is an "open door" facility. Parking is limited and anybody can break into the cars. The room had the smell of a cat, a dead one, and the A/C did not get a new filter in decades. The paint was in need of urgent repairs. Towels were limited. They should start making some improvements or go out of business. It is a cheap place but still it is a filthy cheap place. Will never stay there again !

A mix of everything!
The Hotel was very easy to find and the location is extremely convenient for exploring LA. We were greeted by a very friendly lady at the front desk who we had a very nice chat with and who gave us great advice what to do during the two days we we stayed there. When I first saw the room I was really impressed. Somebody put quite some effort to make everything look nice. However, it turned out that the quality of the workmanship to make it look nice was not so good especially in the bathroom. For example the sink and the toilet werent properly attached and there was always water that remained on the bottom of the shower. If you are noise sensitive ask for a room to the back. Ours was rather noisy, since it was at the front, but you can hardly complain about that if you book a hotel on Hollywood Bvd!
If you arrive late and are still hungry walk about 5-10 minutes east on Hollywood Bvd (i.e. away from where all the tourist attractions are!). The Hotel is very close to Thai town where you can find several restaurants that stay open late. We had a very good and very inexpensive meal!
