Nice, relaxing, laid back hotel but the food was only so-so at best.
Would recommend the hotel with one stipulation: dont go for the food. We went to Mexico for the first time and stayed at the Catalonia Riviera Maya the last week of February, 2010. We stayed in a suite and were very happy with the room. Bed was comfortable and room was kept very clean. The hotel grounds were neat and attractive. Pools were clean, but very cool (the ocean felt warmer). Hotel staff was hard working, very friendly and wait service was excellent, especially at Bamboleo Steak House Restaurant for evening meal. The food quality overall was just so-so, especially at the buffets. Very repetitious and essentially bland. I still havent figured out what the "mystery fish" was that seemed to be served every day. Italian restaurant was just OK and we were both disappointed with the Japanese restaurant, especially compared to the local one at home. Beach was OK, but rocky. Be sure to have swim shoes to wear in the water. Its only a short walk to the marina at Puerto Aventuras but not a lot going on there. A few shops. It was fun to watch the dolphins. Puerto Aventuras is a gated community so we felt extremely safe wherever we went while there. Spent a day in Playa del Carmen and recommend people to watch the prices and barter. Watch out for shops that offer a lower price if you pay with a credit card instead of cash - theyre probably just trying to get your card number.

We didnt want to go home!
The Catalonia far exceeded our groups expectations. The service and food were excellent. The only disappointment we had at the hotel is we were not able to eat at the Japanese restaurant because it was closed on the night we were planning on going (Tuesday) and we were leaving the next day. There is plenty for you to do at the hotel that you dont even need to leave the resort.

Fantastic getaway
Stayed here for 5 days and absolutely loved it. great beach, with tons of snorkeling along the coral reefs right off the beach. The food was pretty good for a 3-star all inclusive. The staff was wonderful.
