Beware
We were not impressed at all with the Occidental Grand Papagayo. The dinner at the buffet was not good at all, breakfast was but that’s about it. Lunch didn’t have any flavor either. The rooms and buildings were not good conditions either, the main building was, and the Royal Club building looked much newer and better maintained but the deluxe ocean view room where we were was terrible and falling apart. It was so bad we had to be moved because it was definitely not like the pictures we saw. Also, there is no beach after lunch time so beware beach lovers and the water was very merky (it is definitely gulf water). The pool staff was great and thank God for them because it would have been a long 4 night stay without them and the pool volleyball.

An amazingly beautiful resort with the best of employees!
When we first arrived we were greeted in the lobby by a waiter who brought us champagne. That eager to please attitude was shared by every single employee at the resort. Most of them learn your name the very first day and you are greeted with a "Good morning Miss so and so" or "Good evening Mr. so and so" at every part of the resort you enter. We were married on the beach the next day, and being the first same sex couple to have a ceremony at their resort, the GM upgraded us to the honeymoon suite at no extra charge. Our gorgeous room was cleaned twice a day and mini bar restocked daily. They treated us like royalty throughout our five day stay. The restaurants have delicious food and we had no problem getting reservations. Even the buffet retaurants went beyond our expectations with a huge variety of selections. I have already recommended this resort to my friends and family and we will definately be returning.
Traveller's tip
Only use the resort’s taxis. In town you can shop & get a taste of "authentic" Costa Rican culture. ALWAYS wear bug spray-evenings the mosquitos are bad-in the forest spray clothes,too-I ended up with chiggers where I sat down on a rock to watch a volcano (I hadn’t sprayed my shorts.) We snorkeled, ziplined,& went on the Arenal Volcano tour (which includes hot springs)-I would recommend all these. If you’re interested in going to Nicaragua make sure you’re staying over a Wed.
