Fabulous hotel
Stayed at the Birger Jarl in September 2009 and everything was fabulous. The room was beautiful and comfy, breakfast was vast and delicious, and the sauna was great. The super-duper friendly front desk staff helped in so many ways, and even went on the Internet to translate "Birger Jarl" when we asked what it meant. Stockholm is very walkable, and we walked everywhere from the hotel. I would highly recommend this hotel.

Very nice hotel
This hotel is very nice; excellent breakfast; clean and pleasant. A little far from old town and the center of the city, but close to the metro.
Traveller's tip on getting the most out of your stay
Use public transportation in Stockholm; especially the metro; get a Stockholm card if you will be there for a few days; it includes the metro and most museums.

EXcellent staff, well designed rooms, good location, great VFM
A fairly ordinary 60s hotel from the outside but a classic inside. WHile we didn;t have one of the rooms personally styled by top designers, the cleanliness, attention to detail (lighting, free soft drinks in the fridge )in design and room facilities was excllenet. The staff were incredibly helpful, positive and professional; and the buffet breakfast was as good as Ive had anywhere (except one 5 star hotel in Vienna whose buffet included Sacher Torte...)We ate in the restaurant one night and the food was good - not great, but good and good value for Stockholm. Lovely cocktails as well. The location is 3 stops on the bus or 15-20 minutes stroll from the centre - but Stockholm sprawls over several islands so nowhere is truly central. This is as good a base as anywhere. Thoroughly recommended - already have one colleague hoping to stay there soon.
Traveller's tip on local attractions
The Vasamuseum is the best specialist museum weve ever been to. Look it up - even if you think Im not interested in boats it is worth going. Covers politics, history, pathology, economics...and the 1628 ship is quite amazing.
