Decent place
After reading many Santa Cruz reviews I was hoping to get a step up by paying a bit more than the lowest tier. While there are no serious complaints about this hotel, it all just looks really worn out and outdated. In addition, our thermostat was set at 78 and could not be moved below that, making for a warm evening as we had 4 adults and one child in our suite. The breakfast was pretty good and be forewarned that parking is free but limited, so you may not get a spot if you arrive late.

Outdated and dirty
Needs a total makeover from the staff to the rooms, carpets are dirty with stains. Sheets threadbare and the room was damp and unclean. I would never recommend this hotel to anyone.

Modern and clean - about a mile from Santa Cruz Beach
When we first arrived, we parked in the basement parking, which was very clean and well lite. Once we found the entrance to the lobby, check-in only took a minute. The hotel is well kept, and very bright in the interior. Our first room (suite) was across from an Ice machine that sounded like an airplane, so we asked to have the room changed. Our next room only featured an interior window, so we changed back to the original room. With the door closed, and the air conditioner on, we were not bothered by the sound of the ice machine. The staff was very courtious and helpful. The breakfast was ok, biscuits and gravy are not sausage and eggs, but with the sheer variety of pastries and breads, we were not complaining. We absolutely loved the gigantic whirlpool outside in a private court yard.
Please plan on visiting the 100 + year old Santa Cruz Amusement park & Boardwalk. Plenty of fun rides, and no admission. Though, plan to be gouged for local parking. In the summer we come down from the San Franciso Bay Area, to attend the free concerts on Friday nights at the Beach, adjacent to the Boardwalk.
