Not quite Major League
Among Fiesta Inns, this one is like a minor league training facility for employees hoping to reach a Big League location. The staff works really hard and compensates, but there are inherent shortcomings at this spot. The laundry never seemed to crank out enough towels to replace the ones taken away; the window frame in our room didnt quite fit and wasnt sealed properly so that windy days made air conditioning unnecessary. And the air conditioner dripped, creating a puddle that used up the towels which were supplied. While the staff worked hard to makeup for these shortcomings, better management should have seen to the elimination of these problems. In fairness, we wanted to escape the usual tourist havens, so these complaints arent whimpers. They made the trip one where we could savor Mexican family groups and appreciate our neighbor to the south rather than our neighbors. The pool was wonderful, the beach disappointing, but it had a delightful vista of kids in sand (though not the gourmet white variety) and vendors of all sorts (and of all sorts of things). Veracruz is not an American standard beach resort. It is a port with beachfronts rather than a beach area with water sports and such. Our primary interest was seeing the Archaeology museum in Xalapa and some of the MesoAmerican sites. Veracruz was convenient to fly to, and stay between excursions. It was satisfying at that level.
Traveller's tip on local attractions
There are several ancient cities that have been excavated and are worth visiting, especially since that offer a taste of the culture of the Totonacs, a peaceful group which occupied the land between the Aztec and Maya groups. The museum of archaeolgy in Xalapa offers a tremendous view of Olmec as well as Totonac artifacts.

Nice place to stay
We were at this hotel for about 18 hours, but we enjoyed ourselves in that time. There is good room service offered round the clock, and the room was comfortable with good air conditioning (important as it was very hot in Veracruz when we were there). The pool was nice; our 3-year-old daughter especially liked it. Although its not huge, and it did seem pretty full of people as the morning went on. All in all a fine choice.
