great for the money
Hotel has been refurbished. Great location, you can walk right across the street to the beach area. The double bed was a bit too small for 2 people. Offers a good breakfast.

Great hotel
We stayed here for 3 nights when in Durban and thought the hotel was fantastic. Great location for surf and/or beach activities, but a little out of the way for some other things, so we had to take a lot of cabs. The service was excellent by the hotel staff, breakfast is fantastic and the room was really clean. The room did seem a bit small, but otherwise, it was great. You do have to be cautious in the area, especially at night, but this is unfortunately the way it is along the waterfront for most of Durban, which is a pity, because beach is beautiful and we would have loved to have done some evening beach walks, but did not feel comfortable w/ the idea.

A 1930s gem
Protea Hotel Edward has a real air of old fashioned luxury and service. The concierge was particularly helpful showing a personal interest in our trip - suggesting restaurants and places to visit & then asking our opinion when we returned. The breakfast buffet was excellent and encouraged a leisurely start to the day. The location is ideal, as well, right on the beachfront. We drove into Durban and had no trouble finding the hotel.
