Nice hotel shame about the service
The hotel is lovely, food in the restaurant was really good even though we were in a separate room for the main diners (due to the offer we had) but we experienced very poor service from the bar during the afternoon, It was a lovely day so we sat outside, we ordered a champagne afternoon tea which arrived separately, first the champagne and tea arrived and then about 15 mins later the cakes and sandwichs arrived, but we had no milk. We had to ask for this twice and by the time it arrived our tea was cold. We then ordered two glasses of champagne which took 20 mins to arrive. The hotel is lovely but the service did let it down. Also the person who brought our breakfast to our room in the morning had a body odour issue - which isnt nice first thing

Wonderful hotel
The reviewer who gave this a 2 out of 5 must have got really unlucky, or be incredibly fussy. We stayed here for a wedding and it was a fantastic hotel. The room was very well fitted and spacious, and had extra benefits like a TV set back into the wall in the bathroom It is in a fabulous location and a wonderful old building. We will be going back
Traveller's tip
If you are travelling to the hotel, try and avoid driving through Lyndhurst as it is total gridlock

A good weekend retreat
The setting is lovely being set in the middle of the New Forest, away from the main A35 at the end of an ornamental tree lined drive. The house looks as youd expect from the pictures with a formal garden to the rear. On arrival, the staff were friendly and your bags are taken to your room with a tour of the various interior features on the way for you explore once youve unpacked and have got your camera. Rooms are fairly small but well equipped with Plasma screen TV and DVD player in addition to the usual luxuries. The price with Expedia discount was very reasonable. The Armada Restaurant is superb but quite expensive. The menu is listed at 45 per person, but even at that price there is a 6.50 supplement for the beef. The wine list starts at about 23 per bottle and goes up to 590 for a 1952 Bordeaux. Our meal for two with a 28 bottle of wine came to 128. The service as you would expect - was spot on. Formal without being too stuffy. Great place for a weekend away.
Traveller's tip on dining
My tip is to try the Armada Restaurant if you can afford it, but to look for cheaper options in Brockenhurst if youre on a budget.
