Short stay is Ok. Long stay no way.
Stayed at the Metropole from Sept 29 through Oct. 7 of 2009. The hotel is reasonably priced. The staff was extremely nice. Most of them could speak English. All the employees at the front desk and restaurant were friendly and helpful. The food was very good.. The room was clean and comfortable. However the colors were browns and tans. The lights were very dim. Even when I turned on all of the lights it was not bright in the room. My room also got very little sunlight during the day. I found this to be depressing. After nine days in this hotel I needed to make a change. I moved to the Rex Hotel and realy liked that place. When I return to Ho Chi Minh City in the future, I will stay at the Rex. I recommend the Metropole for a short stay of a few days. If you plan on a long stay, I do not recommend this hotel.
I recommend going to the Jazz Club if you enjoy jazz. They played classic Amercian jazz and blues music. The bands were great. The owner studied jazz in the US. He plays saxophone and is very good.

good overall feeling
overall it was good, location was central and reception service was very helpful. The only thing that brought somehow of a shadow on it was the travel desk service that was a bit arrogant, and not willing to find solutions. The clerk there seemed she was pushing to sell their package more than offering alternatives.

Great value for money!
While not a 5 star Hotel the Metrople certainly offers great value. The hotel generally and our room in particular were very clean and the staff very friendly and helpful. We stayed there from the 17 - 23 September 2009 and was very pleased with our choice of hotel. Located in District 1 it was away from the "posh" end of town but as a taxi ride only cost 30,000 Dong (£1.00) the location is really immaterial. Good restraurant and rooftop pool too. We also spent the start of each evening in the bar on the 3rd floor playing pool and drinking cocktails.
I would give the massage a miss in the Hotels beauty spa as it was a typical Vietmanese massage - quiet painful and not very relaxing but the men might enjoy it. The facial was very good and they also do manicures and pedicures. At 200,000 Dong (£6.66) for a massage and facial lasting 1hr 45 mins you can afford to treat yourself.
