A Chance to Experience Soviet Russia Under Stalin

I have stayed in numerous chain hotels in Moscow, all are extremely overpriced and remind me of London. Whilst the Sovietsky Hotel is still not cheap it is certainly different and gives you an idea of what it must have been like to have been well in with Stalin, who commisioned the hotel in 1951. One only has to compare the high ceilings, tremendously long corridors, the height of the doors and the quality of the wood pannelling, with what a large proportion of the country were experiencing in the Gulag to have a real idea of what life was like. The service is extremely good if rather Russian in style, the rooms are clean if some of the mod-cons you might expect, such as good TV channels are not there, but this is more than made up for by the pianist and harpists that accompany you at dinner and breakfast and the splendour of the Ya! restaurant which is very expensive but worth eating in once. There is no gym which is dissapointing. Getting to the Metro, Dynamo can be a bit of a challenge but once there it is very well connected. The illuminated Hammer and Sickle over the door sets the tone.
