What a great place to stay

This was my first trip to England and I wanted to pick a hotel in London where I could step out of the front door and be in the middle of everything. This was the perfect selection. The hotel itself is on a quiet street and a bit difficult to find at first without a map, but once you are there, you are steps away from Trafalgar Square and the National Gallery (literally around the corner from the hotel), and blocks away from all of the West End theatres. The hotel is a 10 minute walk to the London Eye and 15 minutes to Parliament and Big Ben. The room size is a bit small for the standard room, but no smaller than a comparable hotel room in NYC, and all of the amenities are there. The only downside is no free wi-fi - the hotel charged L15 for 24 hour access. The room had plenty of light, with windows all across two walls. The concierge, Ian, was incredibly helpful in scoring theatre tickets and picking out the right sights to see. Definitely include this hotel in your options when staying in London.

Traveller's tip

Definitely get yourself a map if walking around London. The streets wind into one another, and many of the locals (while friendly) did not know their city very well.

Hip Hotel in London’s Center

St. Martins Lane Hotel is a boutique hotel that caters to travelers who are style conscious and interested in a hip place to stay. The exterior of the hotel isn’t particularly exciting - in fact it is sort of drab in a 70s office building style - but the lobby is gleaming white and stylish. The staff is appropriately attentive and eager to please. The rooms are comfortable, though not very large. Everything is white which is weird at first, but you get used to it. It has lights over the bed which change colors to suit your mood. Our room was at the rear of the hotel which was nice, but road construction on the lane woke us up on our first morning, which wasn’t all that pleasant. The room was also somewhat warm, though the room does have A/C. The hotel is in a fantastic location, a block from Trafalgar Square, the National Gallery, National Portrait Gallery, and Leicester Square and a short walk to Covent Garden. Plenty of West End theaters are within walking distance and several Underground stations are also within a block or two. It made for a very pleasant stay in London.
