Disappointing

The Hotel Baltzar has a great location, in the middle of the old town, close to the square. Unfortunately this means that it is in the midst of pedestrian streets and very difficult to get to by car. It also means that if you have a window facing the street, which we did, you will hear the voices of late-night revelers. When we arrived at 11:30pm, after creeping our way through the maze of small streets, many of which were one-way or pedestrian-only, nobody answered the buzzer to the front door. Just as we were about to give up and try the Radisson, the night porter finally answered the phone and let us in. He was busy speaking to someone on his mobile and never stopped during the entire check-in process. The room, though a decent size, was a bit musty and the beds uncomfortable. The furniture had some small European hotel charm. The bathroom was fine, a basic shower set-up.

Excellent position for the station and shops

Hotel is being updated, so perhaps will improve. Currently entrance rather uninviting, but is on one of the nicer main streets. Reception is on first floor. Rooms accessed via lift, but you have to unlock a door from the stairwell to get to the rooms on each of the floors. As otherwise anyone could get in unobserved from the street. Would not have been happy to stay in the hotel as a single woman!. Rooms old fashioned, and unusual, but for the money would have expected a more up to date room. We changed our first room which was depressing, had no window (only in the ceiling, which would have let the light in, and couldn’t be opened in any case). The water from the shower went everywhere as it escaped from under the shower door. The breakfast was good, with a good choice of cheese, ham, cereals etc. etc. But we just didn’t feel that this offered enough and were disappointed at our choice. Hotels are fairly expensive in Scandinavia, but we would have preferred to pay a little more to get something better.

See the Turning Torso, Malmo’s answer to London’s Gherkin, 30 mins good walk from the station, or take a bus. See the modern Dockland buildings, many still in development and drink on the terrace at one of several cafes there, overlooking the sea. (Copenhagen is 30 mins by train). We enjoyed Malmo, but a couple of nights is plenty. It is not a "must", but if you seen the main sights in Europe, then it’s pleasant for a change.
