Excellent Value Hotel
I really enjoyed my stay at the Alster Hof (as a tourist, not business traveler). The staff was extremely professional and efficient. The rooms were not at all luxurious, but very clean and in good condition. Its location is magnificent (1 min away from the Binnenalster and a 5 min walk from Jungfernstieg). The breakfaast buffet was gorgeous. Overall, I highly recommend it.

Good location, bad room
The hotel is situated withing walking distance of many destinations. It was convenient to both the subway and regional train stations. Our complaint was that in August w/o air conditioning we needed to sleep with the windows open. Our room had a window on the street behind, which was an access street to a restaurant & bar scene. That led to late night loud voices and early morning recycling dumps (many dumps of many beer bottles at 3:30am). Also, the T-mobile hotspot (wireless provider at the hotel) didn’t work in our room (back corner of the building) and since it is not charged through the hotel, we could not get our money back.

Still a great hotel, second time around
Stayed here 2 years ago and delighted then. This visit was the same. A good friendly welcome at reception,a comfortable room and good breakfast.Very helpful staff. Location ideal - Subway station less than 2 minutes away,start of shopping area an easy 5-10 minute walk. Ideally situated.Many good eating places in Collonade, pedestrian street just round from hotel.Ideal situation.
Traveller's tip on getting the most out of your stay
Buy a Hamburg Card at hotel. Get free transport on bus, subway and local ferries, as well as discounts at some restaurants and tourist attractions. Hamburger Fischstube in Collonade excellent for dining.
