Very good hotel, friendly staff, excellent - but expensive - breakfast buffet.
Hotel Sylter Hof is a modern hotel in a neighborhood of newer buildings a ten minute walk from the Europa Center near the center of former West Berlin. The hotel is very modern and very well furnished, maintained and managed. My single room was small but comfortable with a full bath with shower and all high quality fixtures. Breakfast was somewhat expensive but with an extensive european and American food selection to choose from, including an assortment of tea and very good and unlimited coffee. They had an assortment of free German only news papers to read over breakfast and take along afterwards.
Business travelers would perhaps be better off in larger hotels which usually offer internet access, small conference rooms, and other business oriented facilities. My visit to Berlin this time wasnt business related and therefore I had no reason to determine what business related functions the Sylter Hof offered. However, my impression was that the hotel seemed oriented to tourists and tour groups.

Great location
The hotel is very conveniently located with the nearest subway station Witternbergplatz located less than 10 minutes walk away. Its also very close to the main shopping areas in Tiergarten, and convenient for the start point of the Berlin Marathon. For the location, the price is quite reasonable compared to others, however this is because the decor is quite out of date. The lobby area is nice but the room itself could do with redecorating and the bed and pillow were not the best I have slept on.
Traveller's tip on saving a few bucks
Buy the Berlin Welcome ticket from the ticket machine. It gives unlimited access to the subway and bus network, as well as free entry to lots and lots of tourist attractions.

Good value
Located near the 5-star Intercontinental, but for far less I ended up with a suite, including a bedroom, living room, and kitchen. I dont know if this was a fortuitous upgrade, or if all the rooms are like this. The zoo and Tiergarten are a couple of minutes away--great for running! The staff was quite helpful in giving tips for getting around on public transportation.
