Pleasantly Surprised
I was looking for an inexpensive place to stay while attending meetings in Portland. When my search turned up this Shilo Inn on Canyon road at a great price I was surprised. At check-in the Karioke from the bar reaching the front desk was a little off-putting. The staff member was pleasant, joking about the music, but informed me about the services and benefits (free breakfast) and gave clear instructions to my room. When I entered the room I was pleasantly surprised. The hallway showed sign of wear and tear but inside the room was an elegant and comfortable setting. The array of pillows on the bed reminded me of a friends guest room in Park City, Utah. I had a great night sleep, a quick breakfast and was at my meetings downtown in Portland in short order.

A pleasant experience.
This was my first visit to Portland and was pleasantly surprised. I thought the Hotel was clean, friendly staff , great location ( for me ) and the free breakfast was a nice touch as it was a REAL breakfast - not just a donut and coffee. And I loved the setting with all the trees and plants. As it was October, the colors of the trees in the surrounding area was magnificent. Being from Phoenix, one does not see this in the fall. All in all a most satisfying experience.Would definately stay at the Shiloh again.
October. For the color. But bring an umbrella !

Good value, give it a try
This is a well appointed "proper" hotel with a nice bar, restaurant, pool and hot tub, and pleasant gardens for the price of a cheap motel. Its well situated with lots of shops and restarants nearby and has easy access to Portland city centre, and has lots of parking. Stayed at the begining and end of a trip round Oregon, at there is very little wrong with this hotel, providing you pick the right room. We paid the extra amount and asked for a courtyard room (overlooking the lake etc), and were initially shown to a non-courtyard. The room itself was OK, spacious, clean, and well appointed, but it was very shabby, with holes in the drapes, and even a tear in one of the lampshades, and overall felt very tired. It had once been a smoking room, and there was a lingering whiff of stale tobacco. Upon complaining that we had ordered a courtyard room we were give a new room which was excellent, and had obviously had a recent upgrade. On our return we booked a two queen room and were given one in the "executive suite", also excellent, and great value. Complimentary breakfast was fine, as was the bar service, drinks etc.
Lots of nearby Malls including an outlet Mall within a ten minute drive. One final point. I booked my stay at the beginning of our holiday via Expedia and got a great rate. When we were heading back at the end of our stay our (American) friends tried to book to stay with us direct with the hotel, but were given a much worse rate, even with Govt discounts etc, the rate offered was still nearly $50 dollars a room more. We stopped and went online to Expedia and got the same great rate as I had initially paid, and saved 50 bucks. Well done Expedia!
