Did what it said on the tin
Stopped at the Maritim for the recent UEFA Cup tie between Schalke and Manchester City. The hotel is well located within easy reach of bars and places to eat. It was clean, comfortable and well managed, and proved a good base from which to explore the surrounding area. To access Gelsenkirchen you have to go underneath a little subway, so would recommend safety in numbers especially if you are female walking at night. Not that we encountered any problems whatsoever, just something to bear in mind. Locals and hotel staff were friendly and hospitable. Gelsenkirchen wasnt as grim as I was expecting, there is one very nice park right next to the hotel and some nice little pavement cafes serving well prices breakfasts in the main area ( 5 mins walk) Excellent rail links from Gelsenkirchen also. Didnt eat at the hotel, but the beer was good, but watch out as its 5.50 Euros for one beer! Were I to come back to Gelsenkirchen again I would most likely stay at this hotel as it offered good value for money.
Bring some cartons of orange juice or something as there are no complimentary tea and coffee making facilities here. Drnking water isnt too nice either so maybe bring some bottled water. Cafes/shops within 5 minutes walk though.

Good central location
I stayed in this hotel and was generally satisfied with my room and the catering services I made use of. However I was disappointed to find that the reception staff were completely unaware that there was a lareg sporting event taking place at the nearby Veltins Arena. This made it difficult to ascertain the best route / type of transport available to travel between the hotel and the stadium - I found out by talking to some other guests, who were also travelling to the event. The hotel has their own buses and I believe they missed an opportunity here to provide their customers with a bit more than just a bed for the night!
