Classic SF Hotel
Palace Hotel is centrally located to shopping in Union Square and the Ferry Building. The service was really great here-- everyone was very helpful and willing to offer help where they could. Ive been to afternoon tea at this hotel and the area where tea is served is one of the most beautiful hotel areas that I have ever been in. My biggest complaint is that I felt like the beds were not upgraded. Being part of the Starwood luxury collection, I had high expectations for a fabulous bed. The beds, instead, felt a little springy. Overall, it was a nice hotel and I had a pleasant stay.

Great hotel, great location
The Palace Hotel is a San Francisco fixture. It was supposed to be the "Titanic" of hotels until 1906...it did burn, though. But, it was rebuilt and is very elegant. The service staff is excellent and always puts your needs first. Although it is older with lots of charm, if you want brand spanking new and shiny, this is not your place. The location is good - close to all forms of SF transportation. We had a corner suite which had lots of windows. The views are only of other buildings though - cant see the bay or anything. All in all a pleasant stay and we would consider going back on another trip.
Traveller's tip on dining
The restaurants are outrageously good - but you will pay more! We recommend: Fleur de Lys (Hubert Kellers place), Michael Mina, The Stinking Rose (gotta try the garlic ice cream with caramel!), Alegrias from Spain (tapas place on Lombard St.), and The Dining Room at the Ritz Carlton. Oh, and you must try the clam chowder in a sourdough bowl at Bistro Boudin!

Dated - in need of modernisation
Very grand and historic hotel, not for the modernistas of this world. We booked it up due to good reviews and good deal available. On entering, the Palace is very grand and opulent, with large chandeliers and high ceilings. Good location, right near Union Square. Staff helpful enough - although I did clock the tea person tapping their hand impatiently against the trolley as I made my tea in the foyer just before 10am then whizzing the trolley away (Im guessing they finished at 10am!) Room was good size and clean with nice tv, but walls are thin as you can hear other people quite easily. It was also very sparse and not very inviting, bathroom had greyish/cream toilet seat - not exactly luxury although bed was comfortable enough. No tea or coffee making facilities are available in the room and the water is not complimentary - $7 a bottle! Was just tired and could have done with updating, stayed in more "Luxury" hotels for less.
The hotel is right by the BART station which takes you straight to the airport for approximately $8.
