Wonderful first class historical Venetian Hotel
The Gritti Palace Hotel is beautiful but expensive. Drinks on the terrace bar is a wonderful experience with fantastic views. Breakfast very good but currently 30 euros per person. We didnt eat in the restaurant but it was fully booked on Saturday night so presumably is good. Room was lovely but very few have views, we had a view of a gloomy courtyard but we had a good rate so didnt moan, and were hardly in it. Spotlessly clean. Friendly and helpful staff. Great location.
Traveller's tip on getting the most out of your stay
Take a boat trip to Murano, Burano and Torcello to escape the crowds. Explore the areas away from St Marks Square which are also quieter. The restored La Fenice theatre is breathtaking and can be visited inside on Sunday and Monday. If visiting St Marks Basillica on a Sunday be aware that it is only open from 2-4pm, and has long queues to go inside.

Lives up to the hype...
Friends who had previously visited Venice were floored to learn we were staying at the Gritti Palace. They had stayed elswhere but had had a drink on the hotels patio which sits at the entrance of the Grand Canal. We arrive in the middle of a deluge, 12 hours later than anticipated and were met by very receptive and pleasant staff who made us feel very welcomed. The room was great (we didnt have a view but didnt expect given how little we paid) and drinks on the Canal were worth the price. Will definitely stay again.
