Simply the best
We selected both Santa Margherita Ligure and the Grand Hotel Miramare as a result of a one-day shore excursion from a cruise in 2008. SML had instant appeal as somewhere we’d like to return to and, despite grand plans of road trip, we did the sensible thing and flew Gatwick-Genoa from where the train took the rest of the strain. We booked a week in September and both resort and hotel exceeded even or most optimistic expectation. We had a ’Park’ view room and although sea-view would have been nice (although much more expensive) the presence of the main, busy and quite narrow road to Portofino immediately in front of the hotel might have been a little noisy. Service provided was faultless, although I felt that, in common with many other high-end hotels, guests are deprived of the means to do anything for themselves - no tea/coffee (excellent roomservice), no information about SML/area in rooms (excellent concierge). We took only hand luggage, but even this was whisked from us and delivered to our room later. They try just 1% too hard. But this is a trivial observation.
Traveller's tip on saving a few bucks
Breakfast buffet is fabulous - even if you keep away from the chargeable items menu. If you arrive by train and with only ’cabin baggage’, forget the taxi and walk. It takes about a 25 minute leisurely stroll along the shoreline. Alternatively, the bus (82 to Portofino) is cheap and runs every 20 minutes from outside the station, stopping about 50 metres beyond the GHM. (Taxi will be about 15-20 Euros).

Provisional recommendation - if you know what you are getting
Santa Marg. is loud, traffic ridden, prone to gridlock,nonstop scooters and bumper to bumper traffic. If you stay at this nice hotel, during many times of day and pay a steep price for room with water view, you cannot enjoy balcony due to noise, at times unbearable. Other small towns Camolgi or Portofino much better for atmosphere. Concierge not any help at all, dimissive, distracted, almost rude. Room was very comfortable and clean...as it should be for this price. Breakfast wait staff very attentive. Some of the decor,perhaps new or recently redone, is a grandmother’s kitchen type floral. Would not go back

Nothing in this little town..you will be on the road to somewhere else the entire time you stay here unless you want to lay by the pool - it is a nice pool.

marvelous
We are fussy travelers and expect alot when paying high prices. This hotel met all of our expectations. Service, beauty and charm!! 4 people traveling and everyone felt the same.

Lots of places to see and things to do. the town of Santa Margherita was loaded with cute shops, cafes, and eateries. Much better location than Portofino - which was tiny with really nothing to do but look at nice boats and a spledid hotel!
