The venerable old Victorian Prince of Wales

I love this old place. Yes, it’s usually full of pensioners. Yes, the rooms are dated. Yes, it looks like a throwback from the 1800s. But that’s exactly what it is! There’s a charm that goes with it and permeates the place. I love getting a long old bath that you can really stretch out in and soak in unlimited steaming hot water! The rooms are quaint and sometimes you get a really nice big one that you can’t beat anywhere else for the price.

Traveller's tip on local attractions

Lord Street was Britain’s longest shopping street in Victorian times and still retains the feel, the entire length of the street full of shops and little galleries with one mile of iron awnings. Take a long one mile walk to the end of Southport Pier - you might even see the sea! That’s why they call people who were born in Southport "Sandgrounders". I am one.

Bit like a nursing home

Hotel in good central position. Seemed geared up to parties of pensioners, albeit very nice pensioners. Hotel states room service 24 hrs. Came in at 11pm, went to reception and asked to order 2 sandwiches. Was told by receptionist she would have to check with deputy manager if we could have them as there had been a complaint from a lady in the room above where the sandwiches were made about noise from the kitchen. The deputy manager came out and said he could make the sandwiches but he would have to be quiet. Rather strange attitude for a large hotel I thought
