A gem in an up and coming area.
A great little hotel, with some interesting history. The service was fantastic. Larry and his team were always on hand to help and advise and generally shoot the breeze. They do not have a restaurant as such, but offer breakfast in a communal area and between 5-7pm offer complimentary wine which I thought was a great idea. Long Beach is a great area to explore with many beautiful older buildings that have been restored. Most importantly, the bed was one of the most comfortable I have ever slept in. Highly recommended.

Like staying with Family (who have really great taste)
From the second I walked in the door and was offered a warm cup of green tea to returning hours after I checked out to get items I asked the staff to watch for me, I couldn’t get over the warm, welcoming feel of the Varden. When was the last time you remembered the names of people at a hotel? I promise you will remember Charles, Larry and Angela. Everyone was waiting to offer advice on nearby restaurants or poised to pour a glass of wine or hot beverage after a long day. I can’t say enough about the wonderful service at the Varden. I look forward to going back.
Traveller's tip on getting the most out of your stay
Make sure to request a speciality pillow. One of the things I hate about travel is not having my body pillow. How fabulous to be able to reserve one! Also, the Gold’s gym is very close with great equipment. Take advantage! Wine tasting every night for free is a great way to meet interesting people.

Uber-comfortable Boutique Hotel
Great for a weekend in Long Beach. The Varden is a meticulously renovated Historic Hotel. The owners and staff are warm and welcoming. Services such as wine tasting in the evening, free continental b-fast and coffee available all day. This is not your typical hotel stay, more of a B&B feel. I loved the post-modern aesthetic design along side historic fixtures, LCD TV, Rain shower head, Free internet and iPod docks in each room. While the beds are a little small.. the mattress is WAY better than any pillow top in a chain hotel. The pristine white beds are triple sheeted and topped with down comforters. Wow! We slept very well.

Pine street which is a block away, choked full of great restaurants all the way down to the waterfront. You can walk or take the Free Passport bus to all Long Beach attractions.
