Looks deceive!

When I arrived at this hotel I was not impressed. The rather drab exterior was not helped by the somewhat dark and dated reception area. However, I grew to like it. Everything worked, the room was comfortable and clean, if a little tired, and the staff were efficient and helpful. It has a great fitness area and swimming pool on the ninth floor along with one of the best saunas which is not stuck in a dingy basement. I didn’t try the hotel restaurant but the breakfast was good with a good selction of hot and cold food. This hotel is probably due for a makeover soon and is not the most modern but all in all I ended up liking the place and will definitely stay again

Traveller's tip on local attractions

The airport bus stops right outside the hotel and at 5.90 euros is a fraction of the cost of a taxi. The tram also stops outside the hotel and it is just a few stops into the centre of town.

Good hotel, though not city centre

Hotel Scandic Continental is a decent bargain. Perhaps the best perk is that it’s near to the Helsinki Olympic Stadium and FinnAir Stadium, so if you’re going for a sporting event, you’re well-placed. It’s also only a 10-15 minute walk from the city centre, so in general, a good jumping off spot for seeing the city. One complaint - NO shampoo in my room at all. I know Scandic is cutting down on packaging in an effort to be environmentally friendly, but they need to put SOME sort of shampoo in the room for travellers like me who carry on luggage and therefore don’t carry on masses of little bottles of liquid. Also no coffee/tea in the room, which wasn’t the end of the world, but would have been nice.

Fantastic Location for a city stay

This hotel is not the most modern looking hotel in Helsinki, but is comfortable, clean and centrally located so that all of the city sights are within walking distance. The trams and buses also stop outside the door. There were only 2 downsides - no airconditioning (and those summer nights can get warm!) and the swimming pool is not heated (so we didn’t make the most of it). There was a good selection on the breakfast buffet and free use of computers in the lobby.

Good Headquarters for Finland visit

We were very happy with the friendly service, the breakfast each day, and the central location of the hotel. The building and rooms in general seem old and there are some repairs and upgrades needed. The temperature was warm while were we there and the room temperature was never adjusted to compensate. We liked being able to store some luggage in between excursions to other areas. Overall a good experience.

Traveller's tip on local attractions

Use the trolley via Mannerheimintie right at the corner by the hotel to access the train station, the market square and many other sights.

Okay but no cigar

This hotel is quite all right, but overpriced by comparison with other, better places.

Expensive for what you get

Basic hotel nothing special about it. Pricy but then everything in Helsinki is.

Great price and location

I went to Helsinki to run in the Helsinki City Run (1/2 marathon) and this hotel was perfectly located for the Olympic Stadium where the start and finish were. Rooms were clean and the bathroom was large. Breakfast was included and the spread was fantastic. Great quality food. As for location, the city centre was about a 15 minute walk but other attractions such as the National Museum and Temppeliaukio Kirkko (Rock Church) were even closer. Finally, don’t forget that the Finnair bus goes from the airport to the street directly behind the hotel. We took the 615 and ended up in the central square. The Finnair coach is much better! I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone.

Traveller's tip on getting the most out of your stay

Take the Finnair bus from the airport instead of the local 615. Much quicker and drops you off right behind the hotel!

A shabby hotel

The front desk was pleasant, but we were surprised at how "low end motel"-ish the furniture at the Scandic was. The room was also fairly small, with limited amenities. The low point for us was when we returned one day at 4 p.m. after sightseeing and the room hadn’t been cleaned. We called to ask that it be done, so someone was sent up to collect the towels; nothing else was done in the room and there was no apology or acknowledgement. In fact, three of us were staying in the room and only two towels were left for the next morning’s showers. Our son slept on a pullout couch with a thin mattress that was truly uncomfortable. When we had requested sleeping quarters for three, I had assumed that a trundle bed would be sent up; those are usually pretty comfortable. All in all I was really disappointed in this hotel. Even the friendly staff at the front desk had limited knowledge of basic transportation & sightseeing options. The only bright spot was the buffet breakfast which was included (and, of course, the sauna - but the saunas are beautiful everywhere in Finland). We would definitely not recommend staying at the Scandic when visiting Helsinki!

I recommend it.

Very stylish hotel with utilities such as a sauna and swimming pool. It was an unforgettable experience and definitely I will go back to Helsinki (at leas to try the Finnish sauna!!).

Traveller's tip on local attractions

Suomenlinna Sea Fortress is one of Unesco World Heritage sites in Finland and you can take the ferry from the harbour. It is only a few minutes journey by boat.

Great location. Will definitely go back

The hotel, as other reviews say, is located only 10 minutes away (walking, it’s 2 tram stops) from the very downtown. The area is safe, has lots of restaurants, supermarkets, bars, and it’s close to all the attractions. I booked teh economy room which was pretty big. The furniture is old but everything was in perfect order. Loved the shower’s water pressure. The restaurant is very good, food is good, portions are generous and prices are very competitive. Staff is really helpful and competent. My room was quiet and full of light. Didn’t have any problem whatsoever. I was very pleased with my stays there and will definitely use thi hotel again in the future.

Don’t miss a day cruise to Tallinn. Book online or directly with the ferry (show up for boarding and buy your ticket).

Decent location, good services

Lots of food nearby and out of the hustle and bustle of the downtown area. Trams stop right in front of the hotel and the FinnAir bus stops right in back of the hotel.

Best place to stay in Helsinki

The hotel is easy to get to and in a nice location. Although it’s not in the main shopping area, it’s not that far and trams stop right outside. The hotel itself has a lovely sauna and pool but the pool is very cool, so it’s not like a normal swimming pool. The staff were great and the bar cafe food was lovely.

Would like to go back

We were lucky enough to have a room at the front of the hotel overlooking the city. Breakfast was lovely, lots of choice. Big bonus was that the airport bus stops outside the hotel.

Good location and service but renovation is long overdue

I stayed in Scandic Continental for one night together with my wife and 3 year old son. Overall the hotel is OK but not without some shortcomings. On the plus side is: * Location which is two tram stops from Central railway station or 10 - 15 minutes by foot; * Polite and helpful personnel; * Good children playground within hotel and another one in a park across the road. The only minus is the sad state of room amenities and furniture. While standard double room is big enough for three persons, clean and comfortable it is quite worn out. The furniture is really old and full of scratches, some electric sockets are broken and no longer work, phones and hair dryer are cracked though work OK and as we were packing our staff the lamp in the corridor suddenly stopped working. Despite any shortcomings I still think the hotel is worth to look at as the place to stay in Helsinki.

Overall not bad

The breakfast buffet was really good. Hotel in need of a refurb. Nice sized pool. Staff friendly.

Traveller's tip on recreational activities

Take a trip on the ferry to Tallinn. Only takes 1.5 hours and cost 22 euro. very good value. Ferry is Tallink Silja.

Needs an update

The hotel is nice but you’ll never feel like it’s fantastic. The rooms are okay but some are missing necessities like trouser presses and a decent size desk. Also, the televisions are old-style CRTs. Once you are out of your room, the hotel feels really nice. The food is delicious and the bar is a nice place to relax in the evenings. An update to the rooms would make this a leading hotel in Helsinki.

Good Service, reasonable rooms, 15 min walk to town, breakfast ordinary, happy overall

Not a bad hotel, definitely the best we could find for the money.
