Not impressed

The hotel is in need of a face lift. Our room was big, but the carpeting, bedding, and bathroom are in need of renovation. The A/C didn’t work. Ok place to stay on a budget, but I’d recommend going elsewhere if you can afford it.

The bed mattresses belong at the dumps, not in a hotel room. The TV has no satellite, only one channel, and was worthy of the garbage. Toilets outdated, wouldn’t even flush. Had to add water to the toilet to make it work. One room had cocaroaches. The three rooms we booked should have been together and were not, in fact each room was on a different floor. We requested non-smoking rooms, but smoke was coming in through the vents from other rooms. The elevators were broken and we had to climb the stairs. The building was too old and not being kept up.

Budget, budget, budget

The foyer is clean and modern and I found the staff helpful and friendly but as you enter deeper into the hotel (ie the lift and halls for rooms) a much darker, older side of the hotel appears. The lift only fits one big bloke (me) and a big bag, so there is a fair bit of waiting if there are other people wanting to use it as well. The room was darker than the halls, with the lights on! and my double bed turned into two singles (no major drama) but the window opened to a middle earth type scene that housed all the hotel plumbing and other noisy contraptions. There was allegedly aircon in the room but it just didn’t work, despite blowing air out of the very dirty vents. No remote for TV (you could pay a fee if you wanted) and the room safe also incurred an ongoing fee. The bathroom was the same size as the room with a middle earth view, everything worked so no complaints. The breakfast was included in the price of the room and was simply WOEFUL. Two types of cereal - oats formerly enjoyed by the likes of Mr Ed (talking horse) and what looked like corn flakes but tasted like 4 day old nachos corn chips. The milk was a peculiar mix of tastes - powdered/skim/soy all in one. No fresh juices but orange and lemon cordial that I hadn’t enjoyed since I was a boy. The collection of cold meats and cheeses needed a bit of hygeine control and the toaster probably should’ve been a commercial sytle one, not a spare from the cousins kitchen.

Traveller's tip on local attractions

Hop on hop off bus gives you a great overview of Malta, next day hire a car and stay a bit longer at the places you like. A couple of great beaches in north west of Malta and Gozo is definately worth seeing. The sites are amazing and the mix of cultures - arab, english, italian provides a great destination for the english speaking traveller.
