Stunning views - but more shabby than chic

I booked a double room but the bed was only 4ft wide and pushed against a wall, so was fine for one - but not a double. The pillows were old and lumpy with no fluff to them, which to give front of house staff their due, were replaced immediately when I complained (after two nights of interrupted sleep). Why couldn’t housekeeping have ’proactively’ replaced these years ago when they needed replacing ? The shower head was all gummed up with lime scale, so rather than provide an even spray, it was more a lumpy spurt of water. Again - housekeeping a little vinegar does wonders for removing limescale !!! The gap around the bedroom door allowed a lot of light and noise in from the corridor - which you shouldn’t expect in a hotel of this supposed quality. A lovely breakfast, except the menu stated that the cooked breakfast included flat mushrooms, but over three mornings all I had were (cheap and nasty) button mushrooms, and when I questioned this I was told that chef had changed the ingredients - but the menu had not yet been updated. This kind of sums up the whole place really - a once luxurious hotel trying to be something it used to be, but now isn’t due to lack of investment and cost cutting. Quite sad really. The only saving grace was St Andrews and the views across the golf courses to the West Sands which are absolutely glorous. I have to go back to the area for work over the coming months - so do I stay here for the views and put up with the fadded shabbiness, or do I go to the relatively new four star spa hotel with all the modern facilities in Dundee which is slightly cheaper. It is a tough call (yes the views are that good), but I think it will be Dundee as a hotel should first and foremost provide comfort for its guests, something that the Russacks has forgotten about over the years, relying on its location to carry it through.
