Check the size of your room when booking

The hotel was comfortable but on the small size and lacked all the facilities I would have expected in a 4* - though this was made clear in the published info. The room offered on arrival was very small and we agreed to pay for an upgrade to get a room of a reasonable size. Our friends having booked a non-smoking room were given a smoking one - they also had to upgrade to get a non-smoking one. Location was very good being 5 minutes from the finicular, easy walking distance for most of the old city and is conveniently on the tour bus route. I would strongly recommend the Douro day train/ cruise excusion. The lock experience and view of vineyards on the upper section of the river are well worth the time and the trip was real value for money.

Check if breakfast is included in your booking as it is not usually and is charged at a per day rate at the end of your stay, which can soon add up.

Nice

First room was a bit small but gave us another room straight away and was much better. Good position, not too far to walk from River. Nice restraunts around. Bus and tram stop opposite hotel. Nice bar area and very friendly.

Traveller's tip on local attractions

Port tasting is a must. Take the bus to the beach at Foz, brilliant rugged coast line with nice little bars.
