Very tired hotel in general
Hotel is well positioned and has free parking. Rooms themselves were OK and comfortable enough - although a little tired. The main part of the hotel was very tatty. Carpets thread bare, wallpaper peeling. In need of a complete overhaul. Wouldnt be on my list for a second stay.

Faulty Towers Still Exists
Having perused the dinner menu on arrival and being told the times of service, we descended at 7.45 p.m. to be told the restaurant was closed, and this on a Friday night! I think the hotel would benefit from one of those makeover programs. A lovely old building which needs a total upgrade and re-furb together with really positive marketing to bring it up to date.
Traveller's tip on getting the most out of your stay
Newbury was lovely and we had a super walk by the canal. Lots of nice shops cafes and restaurants. Nothing on at the theatre, sadly.

Cheap and in the town centre
The Chequers is notorious for being cheap and nasty amoung Newburians, and the fact that it is stupidly cheap is the only reason I go back there for weekend visits to the UK. Believe me, if I had the money, I would stay at the Queens, or similar. The hotel decor is in a terrible condition throughout which is a shame, as the building is rather impressive. The staff are polite, although on one of my return trips, I paid for a drink at the bar with cash, and they tried to charge it to my bill when I checked out! The hotel is fine for a short stay if you arent too precious, or expect 5* treatment. Its perfect for the town centre, and has parking.
Traveller's tip on dining
One minute walk from the hotel is a Thai restaurant which is rather pleasant!
