Cant wait til next year
As always, the staff at the Dom Pedro Portobelo were welcoming, friendly, helpful & efficient. It is worth noting, however, that you now only get shower gel, shampoo & soap on arrival, so pack some of your own. The bar/restaurant staff were excellent, many remembering us from last year. Its like visiting friends rather than staying in a hotel. The food in the restaurant, as always, was excellent & the wine selection bigger & better than ever. The imported beers & spirits were a little expensive, but they may be due to the dreadful exchange rate. The pool & surrounding area has recently been renewed & is very clean and comfortable.
A visit to the Roman Villa is a must, if you like a bit of archiology/history. The excavation site is really interesting & costs less than 5 euros. A walk up to the Gypsy market at Quarteria (Wednesday) is an experience. The walk along the beach front is beautiful & the mile passes really quickly. The market itself is a lively, colourful hive of activity, with everything from handmade tablecloths to leather handbags; typical Portugese fig cakes to reading glasses!!! The Petunia restaurant/coffee shop was excellent value for money, with friendly & efficient staff. If you want to treat yourself to excellent silver service & fantastic cooking, visit The Fishermans Shack (under the Olympus Hotel)

Wait for the re-fit
The staff and service at the Dom Pedro Portobelo is second to none, however, the rooms have gone a little down hill. Decor is dated, furniture tatty & plaster coming off the walls. The hotel is due a major refurbishment sometime in the next 2 years, so if your planning a trip to Vilamoura, it may be as well to avoid the Portobelo until this has been completed.
Traveller's tip on dining
If you want cheap & cheerful be sure to visit Petunia (next to Jaffers Supermarket opposite the Marina). The food is excellent, the wine is superb & staff are second to none. If you want something a bit special, a visit to The Fishermans Shack is a must, with silver service, an outstanding selection of wine & fish to die for. This small typically Portugese restaurant is located in the precint under the Olympic Hotel (opposite the Marina). Be aware they do not open on Sundays.
