Freeezing!

Don’t use this hotel for more than one night. The heating goes off and repeated requests for an extra blanket were unheeded so we went on a raid to find things suitable to put on the bed to stay warm. After a long day of art appreciation a comfortable room would have been nice. Contrary to some writers the hotel was quiet although we could hear everything (and I mean eveything) from the bathroom next door, Breakfast is a disaster; very dull and lacking in hot drinks...the water in the taps was hotter than the water provided for tea, and the chololate was so thick it could be turned upside down. Reception staff varied between helpful and downright rude - turn the air con on to warm your room!!! The long flight of stairs to the top floor was a disincentive to return to the room at the end of the day. Siena is great - this hotel isn’t!

Siena is lovely but not to be recommended for anyone with mobility problems as the hills are very steep and can’t be avoided. Many of the roads become lethal when wet and very few have steps or handrails and as public transport in the main part is non-existant walking is the only way around.

Not a bad place to stay and with great location!

I stayed in La Locanda di San Martino for a night and was quite pleased with the service and accommodation. By Italian standards its not bad considering what I paid for some other hotels while travelling through Italy. The room is a very good size with a reasonably comfortable bed. The mini bar was under stocked and the shower gel, and shampoo is like you get from a cheap one star motel. The service was very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was very average, and your better off going to the square for an espresso and panini. The biggest plus is the location, great central position everything easily reached walking. I stayed in a double room and would stay there again.

Traveller's tip on local attractions

Great central location with local attractions all easily reached by foot.

Quirky and quaint

The hotel was very quirky and boutiquey, with lots of hand painted details on the ceilings, walls and doors. It made it feel a bit like a Tuscan villa. The hotel was very clean and the receptionist very helpful. The reception however is only open in the mornings and afternoons for checking in and out, the rest of the time you have access via a door code and key. Breakfast was typical continental. The only down side was that our room was at the front of the hotel and that proved very noise early in the morning as it was on one of the main narrow roads into Siena, so we were woken up by the rumble of delivery lorries.

DON’T TRY DRIVING in Siena! The hotel looked easy to reach by car but Siena is a maze of one way roads and no entry signs. To reach the hotel best to park at Porta Romana and walk, it is about a 10-15 minute walk to the hotel, but that beats the stress of driving round Siena for an hour as we did!
