Banged up in Helsinki !

This is well worth the experience for anyone tired of the usual hotel offerings. The room is well appointed, and newly renovated, and with such thick walls there is little noise. The area is very quiet so overall very peaceful. It can get a little creepy or claustrophobic if you start to think too much about your surroundings! so beware! Breakfast was all you would expect, and also in a tasteful envronment. The staff were extremely helpful. Overall a good experience, although its not downtown.

There is a tram stop right outside which connects with the centre in less than 10 minutes for €2.50. Taxis are prompt to appear when ordered but expensive.

Quirky but comfortable

This is a well appointed and clean hotel that is a former prison. Much of the internal structure remains - for example the metal staircases and balcony arrangement. The menu was fairly small but still managed variety and was well cooked and presented. The staffing level seemed a little low for the busy evening periods in the restautant and small bar - they certainly worked hard. The beers and wines were good, but like everywhere else in Heslinki, expensive (500ml of beer was 6.50 euros and a small glass of wine 8 euros). Breakfast service was excellent - in addition to a good range of the "normal continental breakfast, there was a chef on hand to cook bacon & eggs etc whilst yuio waited.

Fun being in Prison!

A former prison converted to a first rate hotel. Old iron staircases ( lifts too). Clean and very quiet rooms. Nice grounds outside under high walls. Excellent food. Breakfast, the best I’ve had anywhere. 3 of us needed gluten-free bread which was prvided, no trouble, in generous quantity. Conveniently located for central Helsinki.

Traveller's tip on shopping

Prices in Finland are high for most things BUT quality of everything is superb.
