Pleasantly surprised
Having read other reviews of this hotel, I wasn’t expecting much, but it was one of very few available at a day’s notice, so me and my girlfriend booked in anyway. Around the corridors and reception etc, it’s pretty dated. But the room itself was clean, comfortable, and even looked quite nice - not 5* in any department, but for a 1 1/2* hotel this was way above par. If i was to go to Blackpool again, I’d probably pay more and get somewhere nearer the pleasure beach with a couple more stars, but if I ended up at the Ocean again I’d be far from disappointed - and, long though the walk is to the south end of town, it was through the illuminations, so actually pretty enjoyable.
Traveller's tip on saving a few bucks
If you buy tickets at the pleasure beach instead of a wristband, try scanning them through the barriers yourself - it quite often lets you through but lets you keep the tickets, which can then be either scanned again or given to the attendants who’ll let you through. We got on the Grand National 4 times for the price of 1 with this trick.

typical northern seaside guesthouse
although I have stayed in worse places I would not recommend this to overseas visitors as their "expectations" may be higher than the Ocean can live up to. I personally thank the staff and management who were very attentive and friendly. the Ocean is clean but dated in everything from the cups and saucers to the decor. having said that, I would stay there again if only out of loyalty to the staff and management.
