Extremely Disappointing

We booked all of our hotels in Israel with hotels.com and other accomodations were very satisfactory, but this hotel honestly should not be offered by hotels.com. It is located miles from the Old City and central Jerusalem, and because we did not have a car, taxi fares would have been substantial. But the main problem was the condition of the room. We were given a very small room that was in a state of disrepair: the furniture was broken and chipped, walls were not painted, and the two beds did not even have spreads...just old wool blankets that were gray and worn. The air conditioning did not work well, so we asked for another room. It was better, but still nothing close to a four star hotel, even though we understand that Israeli ratings are not equivalent to the U.S. To be truthful, we described the room as "Poland in the l930’s", with apologies to Poland. We actually had to leave the hotel and were able to book at the another hotel through hotels.com, so this is not a negative review of hotels.com in general. We are not hyper-critical people, and this is one of the few negative letters/reviews that we have ever written, but we would not want any other tired travelers to have the experience that we did. Sad to say, but the Shalom was a princely hotel in its day, but the day is definitely in the past, and major overhaul needs to be accomplished before this hotel should be made available to the public, especially Americans who are not used to the rating system. We were fortunate to be able to find other accomodations, which might not always be the case.

Nice hotel at a great price

The hotel is clean and well maintained. Desk staff is very helpful. Rooms have a good deal of space, with good light. Furnishings, while Spartan, are functional and in good shape.

Traveller's tip on local attractions

There are few local attractions to the hotel, and it is located a good distance (at least 2 km) from downtown Jerusalem, so be prepared to use taxis on a regular basis to get to the sights.
