Perfect
If youre looking for a quiet, private alternative to the all-inclusives then you definitely should try Port St Charles. You get allocated a private apartment in a beautiful marina complex and basically have all the comforts and flexibility of being at home (privacy, kitchen with all appliances, living room with TV, stereo, phone, etc) with the service of a hotel (daily maid service, restaurants and concierge on hand, and though we didnt use it they will arrange for a chef to prepare meals for you in your apartment either as a one-off or for the duration of your stay). The accommodation was first-rate and the staff hugely helpful and friendly. There were plenty of nice touches, like basic provisions already in the appartment on arrival (bread, margarine, tea, coffee, fruit, cereal, milk), and when there was a concern over a hurricane passing the island (it went 200 miles to the north, so there was just a bit of wind and rain) we came back to find a selection of torches had been bought for us. We had a one-bedroom apartment on the ground floor, which meant we also had a patio with a plunge pool and our own private landing dock, where the complimentary water taxi would pick you up to take you to other parts of the complex. I would unhesitatingly recommend Port St Charles to anyone who wanted to stay somewhere relaxing and luxurious on one of the most beautiful and friendly islands on earth. Truly the perfect holiday.
Traveller's tip on getting the most out of your stay
We didnt fancy hiring a car so used taxis for the first few days, but realised that the buses are just as convenient - most journeys seem to only take about five or ten minutes longer - and for a tiny fraction of the cost. From Port St Charles, walk the short distance south to the bus terminal in Speightstown and you can get a bus to pretty much anywhere on the island you would want to go, for a flat fare island-wide of 1.50 Barbados dollars (appx 35p UK).
