Not quite four star

My wife and I thought we would splash out on a couple of nights at the Hilton on a recent trip to Manchester to see Green Day. We arrived early for check-in and were told that the rooms weren’t ready because they were fully booked and we were asked to come to come back at 3pm. They also told us that their might be queue when we returned. Well, there wasn’t much of a queue but we had to wait because there were never more than two staff on reception. We reported a leaking sink on Saturday morning which wasn’t fixed before we left on Sunday. The drinking glasses in the room were chipped and when we went to the bar around 5pm on Saturday, none of the tables were cleared and we had to go to the bar to order our drinks. We didn’t even contemplate visiting the Cloud 23 bar when we saw the queue. Now, I know all of these are minor complaints but, overall, not the experience that we expected at the Hilton.

If you don’t fancy a trip out to Rusholme, try the new branch of Lal Qila across the road from the Hilton on Deansgate. They had only been open a few days when we visited but they seemed to have everything right. The food and the service was excellent and the price was very reasonable for a city centre restaurant.

Overated and just trading on the name and being a landmark building

This hotel sets its appeal on being the best for business in Manchester with the price to match - do not stay here. I was there for a meeting and as an unannounced scout for a 100+ delegate conference. My first room was dirty and badly maintained - stains on the carpet, scuffed and damaged furniture, noisy/broken air con unit. I asked to be moved which they did and that room was ok (though only ok, still a number of imperfections like tv remote not working etc). Later went to the bar and the service staff member ignored me because they were too busy sending emails on their blackberry (they were much more polite and interested 20 minutes earlier when i walked past in a suit though!). Finally because of an external fault the hot water system to the hotel had failed and therefore no hot water for the duration of my stay (not the hotel’s fault but the response to lie and say they would have it fixed, and then offer no compensation when they failed to do this). I saw the duty manager next morning to ask her what she was going to do about compensating for any of this, she promised to email me and 72 hours later have heard nothing. Do not stay here!

Michael Caines at the Abode hotel - next time i ll be staying there too!

Execellent Stay

My wife and I visited this hotel as part of our honeymoon. We were upgraded to an executive suite because of our recent nuptials and everything was wonderful. The staff and the service they provided were excellent. We were able to stay for the breakfast the next day and were both throughly impressed by both the quality and the selection of foods available. Everything was perfect!
