Good location for a budget hotel but noise from other guests is an issue

Rooms are reasonably large for a budget hotel and the location of the hotel means that it is only a 10 minute walk from the city bus terminal. The main problem we encountered was the noise coming from other guests - the hotel appears to have placed cd music systems in the guest rooms (our room certainly had one fitted) with the result that some guests see this facility as an opportunity to have a party in their room at night. I had to go down to reception twice to complain about the loud music coming from the rooms below, with the usual issue of guests turning the music down initially and then turning it back up again a few minutes later. After the music finally stopped at midnight, I was then woken by someone at 2.30am in one of the rooms above. As this is an old hotel, the floorboards creak and so I could hear every movement the person in the above room was making - if at all possible ask for a room on the top floor.

If you’ve had a very early start before coming to Stockholm and need to sleep at a reasonable hour, I wouldn’t recommend staying here. If however you plan to go out and come back in the early hours of the morning, this hotel meets most traveller’s needs.

Comfortable beds Good position Reasonable price

The Colonial Hotel is well positioned within walking distance of Central Station, the main transport interchange in Stockholm. A small lobby/reception area and unfriendly receptionist didn’t make the best first impression. Although.... the room was spotlessly clean, shower was wonderful, bed was super comfortable - what more could you ask for? Well, I guess a phone to speak to reception and some tea/coffee making facilities.... Breakfast was the usual continental affair, cereals, cold meats, cheese, DIY toast (plenty of opportunity to make your sandwiches for lunch!) :-) The only problem is the lift, it’s one of those old things that relies on the last person to close the gate inside. Of course someone forgot and resulted in a walk from 5 flights above for me. This is not the hotels fault, but if you are mobility impaired, there is no phone to call reception to tell them to sort it out! So you’ll have a long wait... I would definitely stay again, it’s a good, budget priced, centrally located hotel.

Food can be horrifically expensive - I paid 260 sek for 2 baked potatoes and 2 Cokes (in £’s that’s about 20 quid!) But there are some great all "you can eat" buffets around, and they usually include coffee/tea.
