Bad odor spoils a great hotel
The Movenpick is a stylish modern hotel inside of an unusual historic building located in the center of park. It is an easy walk to the convention center, university, shops and cafes. I had a room on the top floor with a lovely view. The window to the room was open wide when I checked in. Unfortunately, after shutting the window, the room began to smell like sewer gases. When air vents for drains are blocked, sewer gases cannot escape through the vents so the gases come back up through the drains(my husband is plumber). I identified the problem as the drain in the shower and placed a towel over the drain to cap the odor. It was late, my trip was only 2 nights and I didn’t have the time for a room change. I left the window open and the towel over the drain. I told the hotel about the odor when I checked out, but I don’t know if they understood. I would stay there again conditional that the room was odor free.

Good Hotel
I was very happy with the hotel and it’s staff were helpful and pleasant. I will stay there again when I next visit Hamburg.

Very good hotel in nice location.
I was very glad to have stayed at the Moevenpick. Bed was comfortable, location quiet, all was clean, bathroom had a good shower. My only difficulty was with broadband access on my work laptop - some hotels have direct free broadband but the Moevenpick, like many, goes through a system that clashes with our work security system so the connection is not available. There is a business centre downstairs that looked fine - but I didn’t actually use it.
Traveller's tip on local attractions
There are some very nice bars, restaurants and shops just round the corner from the hotel. We ate at the Schanzenstern organic restaurant in Bartelsstrasse where the food was very good and there was a nice atmosphere - but there were several other pleasant looking bars in the area. Avoid the Reeperbahn as it is very depressing - cheap, seedy strip joints and sad prostitutes approaching you all the time looking for business.
