Pleasant and great location
Once you climb the rather dingy stairwell to the third floor location, a pleasant surprise awaits at the Northern Lights Hotel: a light, bright, comfortable room comparable to a quality European pension. Northern Lights caters to an English-speaking clientele, with a very helpful young staff. The included breakfast is generous and tasty. It is only a 5 minute walk from St. Isaacs. We would gladly go back.

This is NOT an Hotel
The first thing folk need to be clear about is that Northern Lights is a B&B; it certainly cannot be described as an hotel. Had I not had a transfer service from the railway station I would have had difficulty finding the establishment as there is little by the way of signage outside. I was well aware from the time of booking that there was no lifts and that the accommodation was three floors up but even that little knowledge did not quite prepare me for what I found when I left the street. The dreary dank and poorly lit stairwell is a definite leftover from a previous era. I assume the stairwell is not owned by Northern Lights but they need to invest in this area to make the accommodation more welcoming. Certainly some work and lighting between floors 2 and 3 would mitigate the negative overtones of the stairs. The accommodation is fine and having free internet was a real bonus. Breakfast was adequate if meagre but the staff were pleasant and helpful. Having said all that it is a fantastic location and will be suitable for fit tourists provided your stay is for no longer than a few nights.
Traveller's tip on getting the most out of your stay
Walk the short distance from the B&B to the Hydrofoil at the Hermitage for a visit to Peterhof. This place is absolutely fabulous. Also visit the restaurant across the street called Teplo. This is a fantastic place and is reasonably priced.
