Location location location

This was our 4th holiday in Madeira and we had stayed at a different hotel each time. We shall return to the Casino Park as its location at the top of the hill leading to the town centre is superb. Make sure that you book a room on the garden side and on the top two floors for wonderful views across the town. The gardens are on the cliff top overlooking the port from where we watched the comings and goings of the fishing fleet and the cruise liners. We would not recommend dining in as the food was standard hotel buffet fare. Within a couple of hundred yards is a street full of cosy restaurants and the old town with even more choice is but a brisk walk away. Breakfasts were excellent with plenty of fruit and breads as well as full English and freshly made omelettes and pastries.

Traveller's tip on getting the most out of your stay

Buy a town bus pass. In the last year a Giro card has been introduced similar to the London Oystercard that allows unlimited travel on the yellow town buses. It is available for 1,3,5 or 7 days at a very reasonable price. All 3 botanical gardens are easily reached by bus for a fraction of the cost of a cab.

Going through the motions.....

The hotel looks like a motorway service station n approach and has about as much character. The room was very comfortable and the hotel overall would be good for a business stay. For holiday however it is anonymous, sterile and soulless. The service wasn’t bad, but was more ’indifferent’ rather than having a 5 star feel. The facilities are there, but expensive to use. We went for Christmas, where they had a programme of live music in the bar for our entertainment - this seemed to be cheesy electronic organ music most nights. Unfortunately this seemed to empty the bar rather than fill it, which didn’t help the overall ambiance of the place. We didn’t eat in the restaurant in the evening, partly put off by the state of the dining room at breakfast (dirty floors and place settings) as well as the cost for a canteen style buffet. There must be better options around!

Stunning views

The Pestana Casino Park Hotel sits at the top of a hill over-looking the harbour and the rest of the Funchal. The outdoor pool and bar are the ideal place to sit and relax whilst admiring the views. All of the staff were extremely friendly and spoke good English. The choice of food for breakfast is very extensive, which can be enjoyed from the Panoramic Restaurant over-looking the harbour. Although the hotel is only a 5 minute walk from the town, it is at the top of a steep hill. Tip - walk part way up the hill thrpugh the gardens, it’s more gradual. The dinner and show at the Casino are well worth the visit.

Traveller's tip on getting the most out of your stay

Plenty of restaurants to choose from, covering all budgets. The bus tours are a good way to explore the areas outside the city of Funchal and are reasonably priced. The public buses are easy to use and are uite reasonable. The views from Monte are spectacular and the tobogan ride is an experience.
