Riads in Marrakech
Its pot luck as to which Riad you get when you choose the mechanism of booking through a central office, however, I guess I got lucky. Dont be put off by what is outside the Riad itself, most of them are located off of run down alleyways. When you get inside the Riad its like a different world, a oasis in the desert if you will. It really helps if you can speak any French.
Traveller's tip on dining
Be prepared for rubbish food, unless you go to decent restaurants, with a few exceptions, most of these will be located outside the Medina in the New City where all the bigger hotels are located. Food hygene is the worst I have seen in years of travel, however, if you are careful you will be fine.

Dont stay there
The "hotel" is really a company and you dont know which actual riad youll be staying in until you get there. Ended up staying in the Riads Fantasia. The hotel was only accessable via an extremily crowded and noisy street. There was no hot water. Complained and got moved to a smaller room with still no hot water! The walls to the central artium were paper thin and you could hear guests arriving at all times of the night. At one point the hotel manageress couldnt find our room key that we left with her. She proceeded to rant at me in angry french for 10 minutes that it was my fault until one of the maids found it.
Comment from the hotel's management
Posted: 20-Aug-09We thank this guest for taking the time to write a review. We wanted to clarify that our group consists of several riad-style properties, which is listed under "Know Before You Go" in the Hotel Details page. We also encourage all our guests to understand the check-in procedures prior to booking, also listed on the Expedia site. We are Expedias receptive company in Marrakech. The old city is 1000-year old with narrow streets, often not accessible by car. The Riad is a traditional and renovated house, with an inside garden patio, a quiet haven, protected by its surrounding walls from the outside turmoil as well as from the heat. Our houses are equiped with gas-heated boilers installed in the basement, what may then require some time before the hot water reaches the bathroom. Traditionnally,in the riad, all rooms exit on a gallery overlooking the green patio. This architectural structure creates a resonance to the singing birds, the fountain...or the sound of a human voice. We are sorry if some late arriving guests did not behave, in spite of written instructions. Because of the small number of rooms and the permanent presence of staff on the premises, no one ever locks the rooms. The guests receive a set of keys for the main door of the Riad. In this case, the manager gave by error the key of the room to the guests, asking them to leave it at the front desk when going out, in order to have the room cleaned by the maid. The maid in charge did not replace the key where it should be. Hence a dispute between the manager and the maid, of course not directed to the guests who attended the quarrel. We feel sorry if the guests misunderstood the situation.
