Braeside Resort - Winter 07
I visited the Braeside during the winter in July 2007. Arriving on a horrible wet night the area looked disappointing, being a long strip of mainly commercial/light industrial units on a road that bypasses the centre of Rotorua. The complex was easy to find by following directions from Google Maps and I was welcomed in reception in a friendly and efficient way, a small bottle of milk is provided by the duty manager on arrival. My room was right next to reception and although cold and unlit when I arrived, soon warmed through. Basic beverage preparation facilities are set up for you in the small kitchenette and cooking and eating utensils are provided. The bed was comfortable and electric blankets are much-needed in NZ winters. The first day of my stay saw much better weather and I found that the Braeside is actually so close to some of the main attractions of Rotorua that you should just leave your car and explore the adjacent Skyline Skyrides and Rainbow Springs Nature Park & Kiwi Encounter. Both have restaurants and I was told that the cafe at the top of the Skyride gondola attraction is worth a visit. The centre of the town and the lakeside are only 10 minutes away by car. A no-frills, but pleasant motel-style resort, probably best seen in summer months. I would stay again if I was in the area.
Traveller's tip on local attractions
A trip to Waimangu Volcanic Valley and Lake Rotomahana is highly recommended, followed by an evenings bathing at Waikite Valley Thermal Pools. Allow 1/2 a day at least for Waimangu and 2-3 hours at Waikite if you can stand the heat!
