OK place to rest your head but don’t expect a warm welcome
Reasonable location - taxi fares to Nanjing Rd or Xintiandi Y20/25. There’s a subway stop about 10mins walk away. Room spacious, had a good view of the city/river and good A/C. Don’t expect room cleaning on a daily basis other than bin emptying and fresh towels. Breakfast was very good - Chinese and Western food available - costs Y50 if not inclusive. Lifts totally inadequate for the size of hotel and very slow, resulting in queues at peak times. Reception staff poor quality. Their English was the most limited I encountered in China and compared with what I would expect from hotel staff they were consistently rude. If you are talking to someone at the front desk expect another member of staff to interrupt you to talk to their colleague when you are mid-conversation and expect the person you are talking to to immediately ignore you and enter into the conversation with their colleague. I did not experience this in other Chinese towns/cities. I didn’t eat lunch or dinner at the hotel. Others reported good food though if you are conscious of price there are other restaurants/cafes nearby that are offer better value for money.

for the money
For my first stay in Shanghai, i choose Jiulong Hotel, and i can say i was not disappointed with my choice... There was no problem with checking in late, and it was fairly quick. Word of advice have the name and address of the Hotel written in chinese before you arrive, that way you wont have any problems with the taxi. When i arrived to the room, i was bit let down due to the cleanliness, but it wasn’t anything major. We had reserved a Superior (Jr.) Suite, so the space was Ok, the regular rooms were to small for us. During our stay they kept the room clean and supplied (towels, slippers etc) and if anytime we needed any assistance they were fairly quick to respond. I cant comment on their English skills since my girl is Chinese and always dealt with the staff. We used Laundry Service at the hotel few times, and they did a good job in delivering it on time and ready. Our room was located on the 17th floor with the window view of the city and partial view of the bund, so we had a good view of the pearl tower. Location of the Hotel was very good, away from all the crowds, yet only 35 minutes walk to the Nanjing Road. Within 10 minutes walk from the hotel you were able to find few places to eat as well few Mini marts and shops as well. Walk a bit further (15 minutes) and you’d run into more shops. Getting a taxi from the hotel was never an issue, and it was cheap getting around. I will definitely go back to Shanghai and explore its beauty and enjoy the shopping, and when i do i will make Jiulong Hotel my place to stay.
