Give It a Chance
When the cab pulled up to the door, my first thought was, "What have I gotten myself into?" The ShaTan is located in an alley lined with produce and food vendors and other small shops, and the smells as you walk down the street range from decadent to nausiating. BUT PLEASE READ ON! Inside, the hotel was lovely, and the staff was kind, courteous, and helpful. The ladies at the front desk could speak English pretty well, which was HUGE for me, as I only know two words of Chinese. My room was clean and comfortable. The carpet could have used a shampooing, but other than that, everything was tidy and nicely decorated. The only thing I would change is I would NOT book a room without a window. Spend the extra few dollars for a room with a window. The dining room is also nice, and the food is consistently good. The ShaTan is just to blocks (a very short walk) to the Forbidden City and the Jaishan Park, and Tienanman Square is on the far side of the Forbidden City. If you want to experience the culture, I highly recommend the ShaTan Hotel. Just around the corner, youll find a very good restaurant, and small grocery, and a bank; and there are quaint shops all around. I highly recommend the ShaTan for anyone who is not interested in staying in a big hotel chain but would rather experience the culture of Beijing.
