Good location, but missed the mark
My husband and I recently stayed at this hotel on a trip to Costa Rica. It is very close to the volcano, and there are good views from the hotel. None of the staff could communicate well in English. The concierge was virtually impossible to understand. The hotel was pretty inexpensive, and our room was large for the price, but the furnishings were bizarre. There was absolutely no charm to the decor.

So-so
Decent hotel, but nothing special. Even though they provide shuttle service on the grounds, its better if you have a car, since the rooms are scattered around the property, away from the main desk/restaurant building. Check to see what kind of shuttle service they have, if any, to get around the area, since it is isolated. Very helpful tour desk. Good breakfast buffet and decent evening meals. Heated pool with wet bar gets high marks. I presume it has great views of the volcano, but we couldnt see it through the rain while we were there (and that was in February--dry season.)
Traveller's tip on local attractions
Area is very tourist friendly. Enjoyed our evening at La Choza de Laurel, an open air restaurant that features tipico Costa Rican food. They cater to tourists by the busload, but service was reasonably efficient, the food was good, and the atmosphere was pleasant. If you drive to the Pacific beaches from here, I suggest going around the lake. North and west of the lake, you will get to see a completely different terrain.
