Absolutely Brilliant
This was my third stay, my wifes fourth. The quality of everything especially the staff was absolutely superb. The three restaurants were brilliant and the staff helped us all fantastically with the menus. Stopping in many first class hotels we are used to good service, but this visit even beat the standards we receive when we stay at the Dorchester in London. It was exceptional

Kick back and relax
The hotel has a good setting amidst the pine encrusted hills in the Sintra Sierra. It is a modern hotel overlooking an old monastery. Pay extra for a room with a view over the garden or pool rather than a forest room. The rooms overlooking the pool is probably better for the evening sunsets though you shouldnt mind the noise of water gurgling poolside or people enjoying drinks though the pool bar is not open in the evening. The hotel has a couple of good restaurants. Midori does good Japanese sushi and other things though not desserts. Im married to a very fussy Japanese lady who loves her food so her endorsement is quite something. However ownership has chnaged and youll need to watch out over time. Arola is an up-market tapas place. Feted and garlanded though personally we found it too rich and the food not super fresh though many others appeared to be having the time of their lives. The location is easy striking distance to the coast, back roads to sintra and the moody enchanting wooded slopes. Its a good place for a cosy few days but not really kid driven. We are not golfers but dont let the checked shirts and funny dress sense of some guests out you off. You should check out the racing at Estoril circuit (a short way away) as we found it noisy on our last day. Wed avoid staying there on a race meeting day. We like peace and quiet so our tolerance for noise is very low.

Hire a car. Eat breakfast late. Lunch mid afternoon. Eat in the evening early. Spend the intervening hours walking, reading, lazing, watching the Atlantic breakers, smelling the earth and pine trees and letting the wind rip through your hair. And, of course, deciding where you wish to eat. After all your last meal was only three hours ago.

Fab but get saving!
We have stayed in some amazing hotels around the world and this was right up there. Beautiful location, friendly hotel staff, great food, good facilities and even the BBC on the TV! The out door pool was very cold but the indoor pool was lovely and we always had it to ourselves. If you dont have a hire car be prepared to spend quite a bit on taxis but there are lots of places to visit just 15 minutes away. The hotel food was really good and the different restaurants had a lot to offer. Main courses were about the same price as you would pay in England and the quality was great. The lighter snacks and drinks were however quite pricey with a soft drink or a beer costing about four times UK bar prices. The poor exchange rate really didnt help with this. However, this is probably as youd expect for a hotel of this quality. The only thing that did annoy me was the smoking- not in restaurants but in the bar, around the pool and even in the pool changing rooms! I guess I am just not used to this anymore. While we were there it was also really windy- the wind made quite a racket at night. Overall a fabulous hotel and place to stay and would love to go back.
