Rooms ok, breakfast bad

The room wasn’t that bad but there was no light coming into it unless you opened the window completely. Opening the window wasn’t nice either because all you could see was the back of the very dirty and ugly buildings next to the hotel. The breakfast consisted of watery scrambled eggs, watered down milk (i.e. 50% milk) and watered down orange juice (i.e 10% orange juice). You had to request a tea bag for breakfast from the waitress and she gave it to you with her bare hand, touching the actual tea bag not even the string! Not very hygienic! The room didn’t have any equipment- no kettle, no fridge, nothing.

Wow! Great views

This is a character hotel and the one to stay in if you want to know you are in Madeira. Views from balcony spectacular. You need to ask for room 32-35 for a balcony. It has not changed in 25 years. But being at the top of a hill means you need to have energy and some fitness or take a taxi.

Traveller's tip on dining

look for a ’hole in the wall’ restaurant. Number 17 - Bom Fin is by far the best.

Fantastic view from window

Very close to the town centre but a very steep walk to and fro to the hotel, however Kept us fit! Staff were very friendly and helpful and gave you useful tips of where and where not to eat and places to see. I have no complaints about the hotel. For me it served it’s purpose!

Traveller's tip

If you decide on taking travellers checks, be careful as we only managed to find only one place in the town centre which was not always open
